Why a Laser (Silk Screened) Printed Pin?

For most pin types, the areas of color in the pin design are etched into areas on the pin metal. The etched metal areas, however, are of necessity separated from each other by a thin rigid of metal so that colors do not bleed into one another later in the process. When the etched areas are filled with color, the metal rigid pattern remains visible in the final product. For example, your pin colors could each appear separated from one another by a thin gold band.

If you prefer to have direct color-to-color contact (that is, no band of metal separating one color from another), then a process called Laser Printing (also called Silk Screen Printing) can be used. Instead of etching the area of color into the metal, the color is printed directly upon the metal. A pin can be completely laser printed if you choose, or more typically partially laser printed resulting is some colors being banded by gold and others not. Laser printing works very well with text, and thin/small printing is possible. For durability we recommend an Epoxy Dome Finish to protect the printing. Laser printing colors is, however, a more expensive process then color filling, and the pin price is affected by the number of colors to laser print.

How are Laser (Silk Screened) pins made?

1. Films are prepared for each color of the customer's artwork
2. One printing plate for each color is made
3. The first color is printed and then dried in an oven
4. Each additional color follows the same process of printing and drying
5. Each pin's outline (shape) is then cut from the printed metal sheet
6. The attachment is then soldered to the back of the pin
7. Plating is applied in the pin
8. Epoxy coating is applied to the surface giving the pin a finished, glossy surface
